Informing as Well as Amusing?

The book Amusing Ourselves to Death got me thinking about a few things that happen in today's society. Postman states that watching tv is bad for us. But I think that it can also be a benefit for us. Like when we watch the news and programs that educate us like the Discovery Channel. In the middle of chapter one Postman says that the news and programs that educate us entertain us to make their point interesting. Since tv is there to amuse us the programs that sound boring are being made amusing so as to catch people's interest. But I think not all programs are there just to entertain you. There are some news channels that are there just to inform people and not to entertain them like CNN. With the Olympics in China, everyone is watching to see how many medals each country has won. But I can't say that everyone watches tv just to be informed about things that are happening in the world. Unfortunately, almost everyone watches tv just to be entertained these days. What do you guys think? Can tv inform as well as amuse us?

Well, Postman did later acknowledge that television has made education available to many people and has made it easier for children to learn. (But that is in the 10th chapter.)
He was able to say that although television has made education amusing and more appealing it has a downfall. What we are learning from these amusing activities don't stay with us long; we forget them very easily because the lesson was so brief.
