Too Many Big Words
I was reading Amusing Ourselves to Death and it was kind of hard to understand what Postman was trying to tell the reader. I mean he uses a lot of big words and his ideas are put plainly in the book, but it is kind of hard to understand what he really means. This really reminded me of what George Orwell talked about in his essay Politics and the English Language. In that essay, he wrote that people in today's society use too many big words to sound smart in their writing even though it didn't make any sense at all. People make up big words and use them in sentences regardless of any meaning at all. I could see a connection between Postman and Orwell in their kind of writing. When Orwell wrote his essay which was in 1946, maybe a lot of people, particularly politicians, at that time were using big words incorrectly in their writings. Orwell wrote that people do this kind of writing to sound smart, but their main points wouldn't be understood by the reader because, according to Orwell, they are not interested in what they have to say. So they use tricks in writing to frusturate and confuse the reader. But maybe writers did that a lot in Orwell's time. It still happens today, but not that much because writers want people to understand their work. So what do you guys think? Does writing today have what Orwell was talking about in his essay?

First, Postman wasn't "trying" to tell the reader anything. He was clearly expressing a somewhat complex thought. I assure you that writers do not use tricks "confuse and frustrate" the reader. The fact that Postman uses a complex vocabulary to express a complex idea is in no way a demonstration of what Orwell is talking about in his famous essay. And I further assure you that Orwell's words ring just as true today as they did in 1946 -- that political writers are not using words "incorrectly" but rather use words to obscure a blunt truth.
Try reading my post entitled "Orwell Lives," follow the links and do a little more reading and thinking to see if this clears up for you.
