educational television, friend or foe?

Is learning on television a productive new method? I thought it was at first but then I realized, from reading Amusing Ourselves to Death, it actually diminishes our learning abilities. Granted, it is a much better way to grab attention than learning from a text book but it does not have the greatest effect. Now that I think about it, schools rely a lot on educational movies to do the teaching. Kids rather watch these exciting videos than hear a lecture or read straight out of a boring text book. It is a good idea to make learning seem fun, but the more we do it using videos, the more addicted we become to television. Students now have a hard time concentrating on one subject at a time that is written in text book form. We need to start getting into better habits and rely less on images on television. If we have come this far without television to be the means of our education, we can go longer.

I believe that the fairly new method of education television and teaching is one of the reasons why our culture may be "amusing itself to death". There are many reasons for this. It is brainwashing the young minds of our society by creating a difficulty of learning regularly, and seems to make kids feel like if they are not learning in an entertaining way, it is boring and not worth paying attention to. Jessenia's example of the learning from textbooks in the modern day is difficult for modern pupils is perfect in describing how this issue is diminishing intelligence in our society. This is, without a doubt, leading to the warning that Huxley as well as Postman stated in their teachings and ideas: our society is becoming dependent on television and entertainment in every aspect. This may very well be the most dangerous, because it is affectin the minds of our kids, and our future. If in our future, kids can only truly learn from entertainment, how much different will that make our society from the one portrayed in Huxley's novel Brave New World?
