Savages

There are a bunch of people known to the citizens of Brave New World as "savages." These people are the people that had rejected the new ways of living and still live as we do know. The so called savages still reproduce and believe in religion and all that the people in the regular society do not. They live in an area known as the savage reservation. It is there that they are contained.

My question is why do the people let these so called savages live if they are such a threat and a disgust to their own ways and their own society. They very well could easily dispose of them in that little reservation of theirs. Although they are contained there is always possibility of them being able to rise up and break the containment and lead a revolt against them. After all, they did once inhabit the world. I do not understand what they gain of letting them stay, and I do not believe they gain a lot.

I think it's maintained mainly for research. Mustapha told Helmholtz and Bernard about several 'experiments' conducted with people in the past. I think this is similar, but ongoing rather than restricted to a limited timeframe.

Also, I think the citizens just get kicks out of watching the savages (for at least a little while). The strange fascination Lenina exhibits before actually visiting the reservation makes me think she viewed it as a sort of bizarre zoo.

As Jessica said, the "reserve" is mainly kept for research purposes and also as a sort of "human zoo". However I also believe that if the reserve were to be destroyed and it's inhabitants killed, that it may look very bad to the controlled population.

The many people who visit this reserve are there to experience a culture that is not similar to theirs, and in visiting this reserve the general population gets a first-hand view of the "unspeakable, obscene and offensive" lifestyle that they are not permitted, or trained, to lead.

Finally, there is no real point to destroying the reserve, if the reserve was causing harm to the controlled population then it probably would be destroyed, but as the savages are nothing more than a "display" in a zoo, the slaughter of these people would be uncalled for.

These "savages" are nothing more than the Native Americans that inhabited the continent long before the "utopia" was built, and thus the rest of the population should just let them be and allow them to live in peace.
