Mond and John

In chapter 17 from Brave New World Mond and John have a discussion about the world Mond controls. They focus on Mond's supposed practical philosophy, distinguishing John's traditional world from the dystopia, and the belief in God. Mond knows about God from reading the Bible and other books about God from his library, while John has actually lived that religious life. Mond eliminated God from his world because from his point of view people turn to God when they are unhappy or in need of something. Since unhappiness and needs are not a part of the State, they don't need a God. While Mond sees comfort as the goal of human experience, John sees it as a barrier to growth and spirituality. John says that a life of constant pleasure is "degrading."

I think freedom is more valuable than constant happiness. Both Mond and John are kind of extreme in what they believe is right for the world. John is all caught up in Shakespeares world but is right in criticising Mond's State. Mond is just rediculous in wanting people to ba happy all of the time.
