television; preventing a distraction

After finishing “Amusing ourselves to Death” I believe everyone has the ability to watch television shows from a different perspective and understanding. Television’s first intent was to be a distributor of information when it was invented. That information has now turned into entertainment and manipulation. When we hear the word “television” our connotation of it is amusement, but not education. In chapter 10, Postman accused “Sesame Street” of causing a kid’s interest for the school environment to diminish. That is true. No wonder we get so distracted. Of course we would rather watch our favorite show than work on some essay because everyone would like relief from work. We don’t want to think for ourselves; just for a little while. Distractions such as television prevent us from being loyal to what is most important. Postman has explained in this novel what most of us most likely already knew about show business. We just never thought about it.

Entertainment is a huge distraction to people. With television the biggest entertainment out to people, its safe to say that television is the biggest distraction out there. I agree that Postman explained all the problems with television. Television has changed from information giving to an entertainment distraction, so it does in fact, distract us from things that we are supposed to stay loyal to.
