I had just finished Amusing Ourselves to Death, and I must say that I have learned a lot about how entertainment and television is slowly crippling our population in its own way. It has us people hanging in so many ways. Our society used to be solely a printed society before television came along. We used to read and write everything. Then came along the television, a new form of entertainment that contributed to society's downfall.
Americans view thousands of hours of television all together in just a few weeks. This has prevented us from doing many things. What claims to be giving us information is really just distracting us from more important things. An example is Sesame Street. In one chapter Neil Postman discusses the popular Sesame Street. It is in fact teaching learning aspects to children but to what extent? It teaches children, but it is in the end a form of entertainment. It is said to teach children to like school, but you can't teach children that haven't been there yet. Sesame Street is vastly different from a classroom, a classroom is a place where students are focused and working. In watching sesame street, children are sitting in front of a television screen; you can't really sit in front of a television in school.
Television has done many things and has us hanging far down a cliff of social disorder. Television still now distracts many others from more productive things. Television now has little value to us. Though the population still doesn't notice the problem with television.

I haven't finished the book yet but I am already on the same path of thinking as you.
People from earlier eras devoured books and newspapers but our culture is devouring t.v. shows and such entertainment forms. (i.e. Superbowl)
But as Postman said, you can't say that there are no future benefits because all forms of media give and take. Unfortunately, it seems television is taking more than it is giving and we are allowing it to.
